A Man, Unmade

Draft project idea
‘A Man, Unmade’ is an exploration of the inner landscapes of masculinity. Through intimate portraits and fragile gestures, the work explores what remains when the armour of expectation falls away. The work invites viewers to witness the spaces where vulnerability and identity coexist.

I really hope to do some more male portraits, as I have this project idea I would like to explore in further detail.
Projects are what drives my passion as an artist and I really want to lean in to that. I’m drawn to the complexities that exist within us, the contradictions, the quiet battles, the tender unseen spaces. I want to create art that seeks to give form to the inner life.

And my inner life involves having to control the urge to start multiple projects at once, but it’s what makes my creativity thrive so here I am 🤪

The quiet connections of a wedding day

One of my favourite photos of late. Why? Because it perfectly represents my memory of this shoot. Within minutes of sitting down the conversation had sped out of small talk and into how art has shaped our lives. Taking portraits of people will always be beyond the photo. Every photo I take comes with a story, maybe small, maybe fleeting but portraits especially, hold more than the image. They hold the vulnerability between photographer and sitter. You can look for light, for composition, for the right settings but look for the person beyond what at first glance you might see and there you have your portrait

Getting my second camera has been an interesting transition. You don’t realise how accustomed you become to your tools. My first camera I’ve had for years and I didn’t need to think with it any more, it was subconscious knowing. Wuth my new camera and for the first time the option of different lens, it can feel a little like learning all over again. Sitting outside my comfort zone, working out how this camera leans in to my style and how it might creatively push me. I’m not good with instructions, or technical elements (feels naughty to admit). As I said to a friend this morning, I’m a little rogue with my photography, I’d rather feel it than focus on technicalities.
That being said, I’ve got a little further to go with this new camera before I’ll reach the connection I have with my first. And the only way I’ll get there is using it, playing, pushing its boundaries (and mine), experimenting, failing and enjoying the journey. What a pleasure to learn anew something you thought you’d learnt

Documentary wedding photography

When I got asked to do my first wedding a couple of years ago I wasn’t sure if it was the direction I wanted to take but the wedding sounded amazing so naturally said yes. I didn’t sleep for a week prior 🤣 nerves are real. But then I got there just got fully swept up in it all. Nerves gone, adrenaline high hello. And I came away and was like, well I loved that. If wedding photography can be like that, then yes please. It’s like going to a party with permission to observe. It’s being a fly on the wall to the most beautiful connections between people. I thought wedding photography had to be loud, had to be directed, had to be orchestrated. And it can be, but it can also be quiet, observational and natural moments.

The use of flowers throughout - they are such a symbolic element in society. Used to celebrate life, commiserate death, congratulate, apologise. Signify a change of seasons. They can open fully with lightness and close with darkness. The flourish, wilt and return.

Falling more and more in love with capturing people’s lives. For so long I’ve half put myself out there but not fully. Because you know, risk of failure is such a big deterrent. But this year I made the jump to dedicate time and energy to doing what I love. So when I send out gallstones and I get responses like this, that little fear of who am I to think I can do this, just hushes up a tiny bit.
